  18. WHO SHOULD USE THIS PROGRAM                               
  19.                                            
  20.     RJB Personal Librarian was designed primarily for people who take pride
  21. in their personal library resources.  By classifying your library, you can     
  22. indentify strengths and weaknesses, find books with the touch of a button,     
  23. print catalogue cards, and identify potentially valuable volumes.           
  24.                                            
  25.                                            
  26. GETTING READY TO RUN THE PROGRAM                           
  27.                                            
  28.     Copy all files that came with your copy of the software to a directory 
  29. of your choosing.  You should have:                           
  30.                                            
  31.             PLIB1.EXE - the main program                   
  32.             REGISTER.DOC - information about product registration  
  33.             UPDATE.DOC - information about available enhancements  
  34.             MANUAL.DOC - this document                   
  35.                                            
  36.     The necessary data files will be created automatically the first time  
  37. you run the software.                                   
  38.                                            
  39.     Before running the software, you should make sure that the "FILES"     
  40. statement in your CONFIG.SYS file is set to a minimum of 20.  See your DOS     
  41. manual for information on the CONFIG.SYS file.                       
  42.                                            
  43.     To run the software, make sure you are in the directory to which you   
  44. copied the files, type "PLIB1", and press ENTER.                   
  45.                                            
  46.                                            
  47. HARDWARE                                       
  48.                                            
  49.     RJB Personal Librarian can run on any IBM - AT computer or true compa- 
  50. tible computer.  It was designed for use with a color monitor, but color is not
  51. required.  Reports are sent to LPT1: (parallel port 1).  No other hardware is  
  52. required.                                       
  53.                                            
  54.                                            
  55. NETWORK USERS                                       
  56.                                            
  57.     This version of RJB Personal Librarian is designed to run in a single  
  58. user MS-DOS environment.  Unpredictable results will result if you attempt to  
  59. run the software in a network environment.  A network version is available.

  70. INITIAL SETUP                                       
  71.                                            
  72.     Before entering expense transactions, you must create three types of   
  73. records.  This is done from the "File Maintenance Menu".               
  74.                                            
  75.     Dewey Decimal:    These records are the subject classifications for your 
  76. books.    Although it is intended that this file be used for the standard Dewey  
  77. Decimal System, you could use any subject classification that works for you.  A
  78. data file containing the standard Dewey Decimal System is available when you   
  79. register your copy of the software.  See REGISTER.DOC or registration informa- 
  80. tion within the software for details.                           
  81.                                            
  82.     Locations: These are the various physical locations in which your books
  83. are shelved.  They may represent rooms in your house, bookcases in those rooms 
  84. or specific shelves in your bookcases.                           
  85.                                            
  86.     Publishers: Create codes for the various publishing houses represented 
  87. in your library.                                   
  88.                                            
  89.                                            
  90. ENTERING BOOKS                                       
  91.                                            
  92.     Once the above records have been created, you are ready to enter the   
  93. books in your library.    To do this, select ENTER BOOKS from the main menu.  A  
  94. description of each data field follows.                        
  95.                                            
  96.     Title -         Enter the title of the book as it would appear in  
  97.                 a library's card catalog.  That is, "The Decline   
  98.                 and Fall of the Roman Empire" would be entered as  
  99.                 "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, The"        
  100.                                            
  101.     Author -        Enter the author of this book.  John Irving should 
  102.                 be entered as "Irving, John".               
  103.                                            
  104.     Publisher -        Enter the publishing house for this book.  To see a
  105.                 list of valid publisher codes, press ENTER.  An    
  106.                 entry in this field is required.               
  107.                                            
  108.     Copyright Date -    Enter the impression date for this book.  This is  
  109.                 distinct from the date of first publication.       
  110.                                            
  111.     Purchase Price -    Enter the price you paid for this book.           
  112.                                            
  113.     List Price -        Enter the list price of this book.               
  114.                                            
  115.     Subject Code -        Enter the subject code for this book.  To see a    
  116.                 list of valid subject codes, press ENTER.  An entry
  117.                 in this field is required.                   
  118.                                            
  119.     Location Code -     Enter the location code where this book is shelved.
  120.                 To see a list of valid location codes, press ENTER.
  121.                 An entry in this field is required.            
  122.                                            
  123.     Have your read                                   
  124.       this book? -        Your options are "Y" for yes, "N" for no, and "X". 
  125.                 "X" indicates a book that you do not intend to     
  126.                 read, such as a dictionary or other reference work.

  138.     Reports are printed from the Report Menu.  Descriptions of the reports

  142.         Sorted by Author  - Listing of books sorted by Author.           
  143.         Sorted by Subject - Listing of books sorted by subject.        
  144.                                            
  145. Index Cards:    Printed on 3 x 5 inch index cards.                   
  146.         Title    - index cards by Title.                    
  147.         Author    - index cards by Author.                   
  148.         Subject - Index cards by Subject.                   
  149.                                            
  150. Other Reports:    Library Value      - Total dollar value for list and purchase   
  151.                     prices.                       
  152.         Unread by Subject - Books you have not read sorted by subject. 
  153.         Old Books      - Potentially valuable books selected by date
  154.                     which you specify.
